The Drexel men's basketball team comes into the 2004-05 season in a different place than they normally are. Last season, the Dragons were picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association. Before that they were picked, sixth, eighth, and ninth. They have always exceeded those expectations though.
To find out exactly where a team stands when it comes to the development of their basketball program, fans don't have to look any farther than the out-of-conference schedule. The OOC schedule is played before conference games, for the most part, and determines the status of the team, and the league they play in, before the start of the new year.
Nearly 30-40 years ago, in the late 1960s-early 1970s, before most of us were even born or were even a figment of our parents' imagination, Drexel was playing basketball in the Armory. About a year and a half ago, Drexel University announced that the Armory on 33rd and Market Sts.
Philadelphia is a city full of history and tradition. Whether we're talking about the Declaration of Independence or Philly cheesesteaks, Philadelphians hold these things as their own and are proud of them. Another Philadelphia tradition that sports fans hold is Big Five college basketball.
Iremember back in the day writing an article either before or during the basketball season in an effort to "rally the troops" and make the basketball games louder and rowdier than ever. Well, its that time of the year again when the leaves are falling from their branches, temperatures are dropping and NCAA basketball is upon us.
It's not often that Drexel gets a freshman class that can contribute right away to a team that is competing for a Colonial Athletic Association Championship. This season, the talented class men's basketball head coach Bruiser Flint and company landed will give the team a faster and much more athletic look as they work their way through the 2004-05 schedule.
Bruiser Flint announced Nov. 12 that high school seniors Tramayne Hawthorne and Scott Rodgers have signed National Letter of Intent to play at Drexel University. Hawthorne, a 6-foot senior guard from Steelton, Pa., wanted to get he recruiting out of the way before the start of his senior season.
The Drexel Dragon basketball season is just around the corner. This basketball season marks the fourth year that Drexel University will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association. There were several reasons why Drexel joined the CAA, including an improved geography that matches the University's recruiting and alumni footprint.
First there's the player who set the school's single-season record for most three-pointers in a season with 90-a player that was named First-Team All-Colonial Athletic Association as a junior. Then you have his counterpart, a 6-foot-6 250 pound center that dominated the paint for the Dragons as a junior.
What is the DAC Pack exactly? If you're a freshman, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. If you're an upperclassman, you may recall seeing a few of our trademark yellow shirts walking around campus at some point. Maybe you attended a game or two and saw our group at its best.
Denise Dillon is entering her second season as women's basketball head coach. The pieces are gradually falling into place for this team as they prepare for the 2004-05 season. The question is - will this be the year that the Dragons make a move in the Colonial Athletic Association? They may not be in position to win the conference just yet, but it sure looks like they will be making some progress.
Catherine Scanlon and Jackie Falson are entering their junior season at Drexel University and since coming to the school, have exceeded expectations on the court. Both are extremely talented players, but also both valuable leaders who tend to lead in completely different ways.
Being the only senior on the women's basketball team, Katrina Martin has her hands full coming into the 2004-05 season. Last season, the team was full of seniors, but after the departure of Viktoria Hollosy, Kim Lucas, Ola Snytsina and Candace Wilkins, they are looking for experience.
The upcoming basketball seasons hold much promise for both the men's and women's basketball teams. Coaches Bruiser Flint and Denise Dillon have two very talented teams that will take the court with aspirations of success and post-season glory. I have tried to look at as many angles as possible in analyzing the upcoming season for both teams.
The Drexel women's basketball nailed two top players in the early period of recruiting Nov. 15 when they signed guards Carly Golden and Allison Lupariello to play for Drexel in the 2005-06 season. Golden, a point guard out of New Jersey, averaged 11.3 points per game and six assists per game last season where she led her team to the New Jersey State Championship.
When a team is in the process of bettering themselves and moving ahead as a program, scheduling is a key factor in the process. Women's basketball head coach Denise Dillon feel the same way. "We put together a really good schedule this year," Dillon said.
