Student Resource Center and Financial Aid merged

The Office of the Provost has decided to merge the Student Resource Center and the Office of Financial Aid effective July 1. According to an e-mail message sent to the University community Interim Provost Ali Houshmand made this decision based on student input and administrative needs with the intention that the changes will provide a more effective way of aiding the students.

Melissa Englund, who currently serves as the director of academic operations in the Financial Aid office, will lead the merged offices. The offices will report to associate vice provost for academic management Joan McDonald. Antoinette Torres, who served as the director of SRC, will now oversee the academic operations in the Office of the Provost.

The locations of SRC and Financial Aid will relocate when the Main Building renovations are complete.

New Interactive Campus Map

A new interactive campus map was posted on the University's website June 17. The map allows users to scroll and zoom in on each of the three campuses and view detailed information about the buildings. The map also provides information about parking, accessibility, emergency call boxes and shuttle and subway stops.

To view the map users will need to have Macromedia Flash player installed on their computers. The map was created by the Office of University Relations and BigBad, a interactive media agency based in Boston.

Students awarded $500 for best suggestions

University President Papadakis awarded $500 cash awards to 2005 graduates Rachel Pannepacker and Joseph Dougherty for providing the best undergraduate student suggestions which have now been implemented by the University at the University City Main Campus commencement June 11.

Dougherty suggested that the University implement customer service training for their new employee orientations. This concept now plays a major factor in the StudentsFirst initiative. Pannepacker suggested that the University teacher their students how to manage their personal finances. Topics on financial management will now be placed in the UNIV 101 courses.

Papadakis encourages all undergraduate students to send their suggestions for improving the University to papadakis@drexel.edu, as was the case with Dougherty and Pannepacker.

DragonFire online magazine launches in July

DragonFire, an interactive multimedia online magazine, will be made available for public viewing in the first week in July.

The magazine will be published under the leadership of editor-in-chief Amy Webb through the Pennoni Honors College. DragonFire is developed by various academic and administrative departments and includes web designers, engineers, database specialists, writers, media professionals and funding experts.

The site will host print, audio and video stories on news, politics, law, business, technology, science, medicine, health, culture, arts, entertainment and Philadelphia. Original works of fiction and poetry will also be featured on the site.

DragonFire will be published twice per month until Jan 2006 when it will then go weekly. Subscription to the site will be free. For more information visit http://www.dfire.org.
