It is rare that one can pay only $25 for pan-seared New York Strip Steak with a salt and peppercorn mignonette, flambéed with brandy and finished chicken stock.

University City restaurants will host a unique dining promotion called University City Dining Days June 23-30 with three course dinners being offered at 19 locations for either $20, $25, or $30.

"This promotion was a grass roots based idea that developed out of some conversations among local restaurants," Senior Director of Marketing and Communications for the University City District Lori Klein Brennan said. "They wanted to get together and develop a promotion that highlighted the diversity of the restaurant offerings in University City."

The restaurant owners suggested offering three-course dinners at lowered prices. The three tier price structure is in recognition of University City's 'Left of Center' reputation, according to Brennan. The range of prices is able to accommodate a wider range of restaurants and diners. These prices are only for dinner and do not include alcohol, tax, or gratuity.

UCD hopes that the event will be a success. "If Dining Days is a hit then it could be offered perhaps even twice a year," Brennan said.

Restaurant owners have two goals for Dining Days. First, they hope that Dining Days will increase traffic at and bring new customers to their restaurants. They also aim to increase the profile of diverse dining options in University City.

UCD is also excited about Dining Days and feels it will bring many people to University City. This belief is founded upon research performed last year for UCD. According to the research, restaurants are the biggest factor to lure people from outside of the district to visit University City.

Dining Days is also an excellent opportunity for students. "The promotion gives students the chance to affordably eat at some unique restaurants that they might not have normally been able to afford," Brennan said.

When informed of the event, Sophomore Kamal Shair remarked, "That sounds cool. I would do it."

Dahlak, Marathon, Smokey Joes, and Cavanaugh's are offering meals for $20. The restaurants offering $25 meals include Abbraccio, Bubble House, Rx, Ecco Qui, Vientiane Café, World Café Live, the Restaurant School, and Zocalo. $30 meals may be found at LaTerrasse, Marigold, Nan, New Deck, and Penne. At New Deck and Strikes Bowling Lounge, two people can dine for $30.

University City Dining Days are sponsored by City Paper, University City District, University City Review, and the University of Pennsylvania. More information, including menus for the restaurants, is made available at http://www.ucityphila.org.
