The Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee released the student organizations' appeals requests for annual allocation, which totaled approximately $18,000, June 30.

Out of the 73 organizations that were allocated money May 18, only 21 of them filled out the appeals allocation application.

The Sailing Club received the largest appeals allocation of $2,232, while Men's Ice Hockey team received the second largest amount of $2,010. Filipino Intercultural Society received the smallest amount of $58, while Anime & Gaming, Math and Computer Science Society and Men's Basketball received no appeals allocations.

A few student organizations experienced a huge increase in their annual allocation when their appeals results came in.

Examples include American Society of Civil Engineers, which saw a 586 percent increase, from $216 to 1,483; the Men's Lacrosse club, which saw a 364 percent increase, from $318 to $1,160; the Track club, which saw a 272 percent increase, from $330 to $1,230.

The Undergraduate Student Government Association was pleased with the appeals allocations.

"I have not received any complaints [from student organizations] about SAFAC's appeal's process, but by looking at the numbers, it appears that SAFAC was reasonable with the appeal allocations," Student Organization representative for USGA Chris Duffy said. "SAFAC has a tough job and distributing almost one million dollars across numerous organizations is no easy task."

Duffy also provided comments on how USGA plans to alleviate the conflicting relationship that it currently has with SAFAC.

"With a new USGA administration settled in, we are looking forward to meeting with SAFAC to better understand the organization's needs and how USGA can help. On the same note, we want to ensure that the students are fully aware of the allocation process, as funding is an important part to the success of student organizations. Furthermore, I strongly encourage anyone with concerns to contact me directly."

All recognized student organizations were eligible to fill an annual allocation request form in order to receive a budget. The form was due April 5 and student organizations found out the results several weeks later. Student organizations not happy with their annual allocation are allowed to apply for an appeal. The appeal request form was due June 11 and student organizations found out their results a couple of weeks later.

In order for student organizations to appeal, they had to submit their annual allocation request form by the set deadline, arrange a meeting with their SAFAC liaison and submit the appeal request form by the set deadline, according to the SAFAC By-laws.

The appeals, referred to as Type I, could only be made for items not fully funded in the annual allocation request. Items not included on the original annual allocation request form would not be considered. In addition, student organizations' budgets could not decrease in the appeals process.

If student organizations are not satisfied with their appeal results, they can apply for Type II appeals. Student organizations who never filled out an annual allocation request form can also apply for the appeal but are not guaranteed to receive an annual allocation since SAFAC may not have much money left that was not appropriated.

The Triangle contacted SAFAC advisor Bridget Scanlan and SAFAC chair Vjunichenko but were unable to contribute in time for production.
