In the nation's fifth largest city crime is a major problem that exists even on a University campus.
The Department of Public Safety exists to ensure that students feel safe on the University's urban campus. The trick to staying safe on this campus is a combination of knowing what areas are safe and how to use Public Safety to their advantage. It will not take long for a new student to find out which areas are safe and which are not. However, even students that have been at the University for a couple of years do not fully know all of the ways Public Safety maintains a safe campus.
First, students often ignore the blue emergency call boxes which are placed strategically around campus. With a push of a button, students can be in contact with someone in the public safety dispatch center immediately, 24 hours a day.
Another little-known fact that the public safety department offers are walking escorts who can meet students at any on campus location and walk with them to their destination located both on and off campus 24 hours a day.
The Department of Public Safety also offers crime prevention seminars held at the beginning of each term and periodically throughout the year in order to heighten the University's awareness on public safety.
The campus shuttle service is also provided by the department to enable students and staff safe, unlimited travel from campus locations to areas of interest in the Center City and University City areas.
Important phone numbers for the department include (215)895-2822 (or just 2822 from campus phones) for non-emergency dispatches and (215)895-2222 (2222 from campus phones) for emergency dispatches. To contact Philadelphia police directly, students can dial 9-911 from campus phones. The Department of Public Safety office can be reached by calling (215)895-1550.
