The process of steering the bride in the right direction is one that Lamantia has mastered over the years. The focus is immediately directed towards the body type and figure of the client; certain dresses, such as one with a cinched waist and fully draped skirt by Omsalla Herrera that Lamantia brought and displayed for the class, would be recommended for a girl with a slightly fuller bust who also wants to hide her hips. She adds that she would not put the same girl in a sleeker rendition of a less-defined gown by Jenny Lee suited for a "sexy, beachfront wedding." Speaking of this new and upcoming designer, Lamantia announced that Lee will be the name on everyone's mind in bridal design in two to three years time - "mark my words."
"We're in the wedding retail business because we love it... we may not get rich from it, but we make a nice living," Lamantia says of both herself and Sole. She appreciates networks like the Style channel and teachers like Emil who recognize that weddings do very much coincide with the fashion industry. "Everyone thinks everyone else's job is so glamorous," Lamantia concluded, "but when it comes down to it, what I do is order and sell bridal gowns."
As the class dispersed, Brittany Cormack, a junior majoring in Fashion Design, thanked the two guest speakers for coming. "That's what I have always wanted to do ¬- own my own wedding business." Just one of the many great aspects of the class is that students have a chance to get inspired and perhaps even end up working for one of the guest speakers; maybe one day they'll be the competition.
