The sixth-seeded Dragons were upset by 11th-seeded James Madison, 77-65.
"We played awful," Flint said after his team finished by losing four of its final five games. "We played hard, but played nervous. We just didn't make shots. What do you want me to say?"
Given the fact that Drexel had beaten the Dukes twice in the regular season, I liked the Dragons to get through to round two. However, as I wrote last week, a couple of woeful shooting stats scared me.
Drexel finished 11th in the CAA in shooting percentage (.441) and ninth in the free throw percentage (.661).
Flint knew the Dragons couldn't shot the ball poorly against JMU, but they did.
Drexel was 21-for-61 from the field and 20-for-34 from the free throw line.
The Dragons were down by 11 in the second half before rallying to get within five.
They just couldn't get over that hump.
CAA Rookie of the Year Chris Fouch had a team-high 20 points for Drexel, while junior guard Jamie Harris, an all-CAA third team pick, finished with 15 points on 3-for-15 shooting.
The Dragons were certainly done-in by the play of their big men, who combined for just eight points.
Sophomore Samme Givens had seven points, but the senior tandem of Evan Neisler and Leon Spencer combined for just one between them.
Drexel will return almost its entire roster form 2009-10 next season.
But given its woes from the floor and the stripe, will that even matter?
The only bright side for the Dragons down in Richmond, Va. was former Drexel All-American diver Kate Hynes being named a CAA Silver Star.
Other CAA Silver Stars you may have heard of: David Robinson (Navy), Eric Maynor (VCU), Johnny Newman (Richmond), Justin Verlander (Old Dominion) and Sean Casey (Richmond).
Would you have ever thought to put Hynes in that type of select company? No.
But did you think Drexel was going to lose in the first round?
Yes.
