The Drexel men's lacrosse team piled on each other like they'd just won the national championship. It wasn't necessarily a miracle, per say, but the 20th-ranked Dragons made the impossible happen March 9 at Vidas Field, stunning third-seeded Notre Dame, 7-6, in overtime.
The Drexel women's basketball team's chances of repeating as Colonial Athletic Association champions ended rather quickly. After rallying from an 11-point second-half deficit to force overtime and scoring the first five points of the extra session, the fourth-seeded Dragons looked to be well on their way to a comeback victory over fifth-seeded Delaware in the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament.
A year after winning its first-ever Colonial Athletic Association championship and qualifying for its first-ever NCAA Tournament, the Drexel women's basketball team (17-12) returns to Harrisburg, Va. as the fourth seed in this year's CAA Tournament. The Dragons will face fifth-seeded Delaware (20-10) in the CAA quarterfinals March 12 after the Blue Hens defeated 12th-seeded George Mason (10-19) 58-41 in round one.
For all the talk of the Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball tournament being a wide-open field-seven teams had won at least 10 games- the favorite still came out on top. Just as I predicted, top-seeded Old Dominion beat third-seeded William & Mary in the CAA championship game, 60-53, to advance to its 10th NCAA Tournament in program history.
The Drexel softball team will participate in its final non-conference tournament of the season March 14 it heads to Baltimore, Md. to take part in the UMBC Tournament. The Dragons (3-5) are coming off of an outstanding showing at the UCSB Gaucho Classic. They defeated the host Gauchos 4-2 and came out on top in extra innings against Wisconsin 6-5.
The Drexel women's lacrosse team boosted its record up to an impressive 6-1 after beating Bucknell 13-11 March 7 in Lewisburg, Pa. The Dragons deflated the Bucknell crowd by mounting a second-half comeback after being down 7-4 at the end of the first half.
When the Drexel men's basketball season ended March 9, so did my career covering the Dragons as an undergraduate. It seems like just yesterday that I attended my first game Nov. 14, 2005 when Drexel took on Princeton in the NIT Season Tip-off at Jadwin Gymnasium, sitting up in the upper tank with the DAC Pack.
The Drexel men's and women's tennis teams are each coming off of convincing conference victories, as both teams defeated Hofstra March 6. Both the men and the women won by a margin of 6-0. After blanking the Pride, the Drexel men's tennis team improved to 4-4.
