Not long ago, our government agreed to extend the Bush Tax Cuts for the top 2 percent of Americans despite the fact that we are experiencing an economic downturn. Despite the fact that much money was needed by the government to pay for services, debts and programs, government officials ultimately knew that raising taxes would draw the ire of the public and would make legislators unelectable in the future.
