Phil Kappa Psi and Phi Sigma Sigma host children’s Egg Hunt

The Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and Phi Sigma Sigma sorority hosted their first children’s Easter Egg Scramble April 12 in the Armory.

The event was free of charge and open to all children of faculty and staff employed at Drexel University. Fifty-five children from 15 families participated. A total of 2,000 candy and trinket-filled eggs were scattered across the Armory floor, and children raced to collect the most eggs. There were six eggs that held notes for claims to larger prizes, including coloring kits, a Hot Wheels race set and Nerf footballs.

Phi Kappa Psi first-year construction management major Emerson Dolby and Phi Sigma Sigma sophomore psychology major Elizabeth Nolan planned the event. It was the first time that the fraternity and sorority worked together.

Dolby said, “The Easter Egg Scramble was an idea of Phi Psi’s, and we approached Phi Sigma to see if they would like to participate with us and they were very enthused.”

Beyond the Scramble, children had the chance to paint Easter eggs, have their faces painted, take photos with the Easter Bunny and enjoy popcorn, courtesy of Drexel’s Student Organization Resource Center.

“My favorite part was talking to the kids who got their faces painted,” Nolan said. “They were so excited over something so small that it really reminded me that it’s the little things in life that matter.”

According to Dolby, the event was planned to be indoors so that it could happen rain or shine. Nolan explained, “Had it been outside we could have hidden the eggs, but there was nowhere to hide them in the Armory since it’s wide open, therefore it was more of a scramble.” However, Dolby said he hopes to be able to have it in a park next year.

Approximately 50 volunteers from Phi Kappa Psi and Phi Sigma Sigma came out to ensure the event ran smoothly. Dolby explained that the event was open only to children of Drexel University faculty and staff, “Being the first time we held this event, it was easier this way to get a reasonable number, but next year it will be opened up to all of the Drexel community — siblings, cousins, etc.”

According to Dolby and Nolan, the purpose of the event was to spread holiday spirit, say “thank you” to Drexel faculty and staff for all they do, and offer their children a chance to have fun. In doing so, Nolan said, “Phi Sig also built a relationship with Phi Psi, a fraternity that we previously hadn’t had any events with.”

Overall, Phi Kappa Psi and Phi Sigma Sigma regarded the event as a success and plan to make it an annual event and partnership between the fraternity and sorority.
