Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Over the past year that I have been at Drexel, it has become evident to me and other freshmen that Drexel does not provide good quality food options for its students and faculty. Looking into the food options, I realized that there are not a lot of options to choose from. As a freshman who is required to choose a dining plan when coming to Drexel, the only places that serve food that accept Dining Dollars are Subway, Chick-fil-A, Currito, Northside Market, Creese Cafe, Taco Bell, Seasons, ThirtyOne41, Starbucks, and of course, the Handschumacher Dining Center. Out of these options, only Subway can be thought of as healthy.

However, even though there are ten options, the Handschumacher, (more commonly referred to as the Hans,) is the main place people go to because most people cannot afford to get enough Dining Dollars to last the entire quarter. The main problem with the Hans is that Drexel’s administration decided to choose Sodexo as the food provider. Sodexo is notoriously known among students ffas one of the worst food providers for schools and companies. There has been a lot of news about how students complain about Sodexo and its service, like in Fordham’s student newspaper, The Ram. Students went to their town hall to protest against Sodexo because their dining facilities had health code violations in four places. Another thing that I think Drexel needs to reconsider is the location of the Hans. For all of the freshmen that go to Drexel full time, it is about a two-block walk from their dorms, which can take a while — especially in bad weather.

Instead of Sodexo, Drexel could hire Aramark or Compass Group, both of whom put more money into making their food. Both companies have much better reviews then Sodexo. If Drexel changed food providers, I think that the quality of food would become better, and less students would be unhappy with the quality of food.
