DU golf ready for Big 5 tourney

Drexel University’s varsity golf team had a disappointing performance Sept. 29-30 in Lorton, Va. Drexel competed in George Mason University’s CHAMP/Patriot Intercollegiate Tournament, finishing in 11th place. This subpar performance was unexpected after a first-place finish at the Swarthmore Open a week before.

Head coach Mike Dynda was asked what he needs from his team in order to bounce back for next weekend’s Big 5 Invitational, hosted by Temple University.

“I need the team to be more consistent. If you look at the individuals, each one of them had a good round. We just need four guys out of five to play decent instead of two or three,” Dynda said. “College golf counts four out of five scores, and we can’t afford to have 67-75 out of one and two and get nothing out of three, four and five”.

The one bright spot for the team was freshman Christopher Crawford, a product of Holy Ghost Preparatory School, who over three days shot 1 over par. This is the third straight week that Crawford has had a strong performance and appeared to be carrying the bulk of the load for Drexel.

“Christopher is a fine young man and a heck of a player. He is doing what I thought he could do,” Dynda said. “The next four years are going to be fun.”

As a result of his past performance, Crawford has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Player Of The Week.

Starting Oct. 13, Drexel will take part in the Big 5 Invitational in Philadelphia. It features 22 schools, including six Ivy League schools. The top four teams going into the tournament are Dartmouth College, the University of Pennsylvania, Campbell University and Temple. Drexel is looking to bounce back after strong starts at the St. Bonaventure Keenan Invitational and the Swarthmore Open.

Last year the Dragons finished near the bottom of the standings at the Big 5 tournament. They’ll be looking for Crawford to bring a spark to the tournament and for their upperclassmen to show composure and experience. They tee off at 7 a.m. Oct. 13 at the Plymouth Country Club in Norristown, roughly 30 minutes north of Drexel’s main campus.
