Alexander Wang at H&M

I

t was recently announced that the young American designer, Alexander Wang, will be the next designer to collaborate with the Swedish multinational retail company, H&M. The collection will include women and menswear, as well as accessories.

Over the past few years, H&M has collaborated with a number of designers including Lanvin, Stella McCartney, Marni, Versace and Isabel Marant, who released her collaboration last fall. Wang will be the first American designer to collaborate with the Swedish retail store.

According to British Vogue, Wang expressed his enthusiasm toward the collaboration, “It’s an exciting and fun process. They are very open to pushing boundaries and to [setting] a platform for creativity. This will be a great way for a wider audience to experience elements of the Alexander Wang brand and lifestyle.”

It is no surprise that H&M’s creative adviser, Margareta van den Bosch selected the young and talented American designer to be the next collaborator. According to British Vogue, van den Bosch describes the designer as “one of the most important voices in fashion today,” and how “he understands exactly what people want to wear and does it with an energy and passion that’s infectious.”

“It feels incredible to be collaborating with him this year,” van den Bosch said.

Wang first presented his women’s ready-to-wear collection in fall 2007. Since then, his success as a designer rapidly increased, and he won the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Swarovski Womenswear Designer of the Year Award in 2009. Today, his brand is sold in 700 stores nationwide, and can be found in various luxury department stores including Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman and Dover Street Market.

Known for his great tailoring skills, Wang often includes an array of knits, athletic-inspired cuts and model-off-duty styles in his designs. According to Vogue, Wang’s primary direction for his brand is to design “clothes that girls want to wear.” His success as a designer eventually led him to become the creative director for the French design house, Balenciaga, where he replaced the legendary designer, Nicolas Ghesquiere.

It is no doubt that the collaboration collection with H&M will be highly anticipated. Everyone should mark their calendars, as the collection is set to release in 250 selected stores all over the world Nov. 6.
