Big Sean and 2 Chainz break records at Fall Fest
According to senior entrepreneurship major and director of Dragon Concert Series Ben Melman, “Fall Fest became the largest concert in Drexel history two days before the show and sold out the day of with 5,500 attendees.” He continued, “our initial capacity was 7,500, but due to police and public safety restraints, we made the call to limit it to 5,500.”

Fall Fest replaces two annual shows
Dragon Concert Series announced Sept. 4 that hip-hop artists 2 Chainz and Big Sean will co-headline the inaugural Drexel Fall Fest. Supporting acts are still to be determined.

A$AP Rocky falls flat with his debut album
At the end of 2011, before ever releasing a mixtape, A$AP Rocky signed a $3 million record deal with RCA and Polo Grounds Music. Just weeks later, on Halloween, Rocky unleashed his impressive mixtape, “Live.Love.A$AP,” and instantly became one of the next rising stars in hip-hop. After touring off of that mixtape again to hype up his first studio release, Rocky continued his growth as his popularity continued to increase.

Wale takes next step with ‘Folarin’
2012 was an incredible year for Wale. After releasing his sophomore album and Maybach Music Group debut “Ambition” at the end of 2011, Wale began to emerge as one of the next rap superstars. The album’s lead single, “Lotus Flower Bomb,” featuring Miguel, is up for a Grammy Award this year, and Wale starred on a number of hits from his label’s collaboration album, “Self Made Vol. 2.” To close out 2012, Wale released a brand-new mixtape Dec. 24 titled “Folarin.”

Hip hop bids adieu to its hits and misses of the year
Meek Mill pumped up the atmosphere this summer with his hit mixtape “Dreamchasers 2.” Other successful tracks of the year include “Daughters” by Nas and “Clique” by Big Sean featuring Jay-Z and Kanye West.Ladies and gentlemen, it is that time of year again when I tell you what albums, mixtapes and songs you should have rocked with in 2012. I fill you in on what upset me the most this past year and what to look forward to if the Mayans were wrong and 2013 actually happens. Here is my recap of hip-hop in 2012.

Rick Ross and friends celebrate on current hits with ‘The Black Bar Mitzvah’
Rick Ross is arguably the hottest rapper in hip-hop right now and has built up an incredibly successful label, Maybach Music Group, under Warner Bros. Records. Despite putting out his fifth studio album, “God Forgives, I Don’t,” this summer, Ross decided to keep the momentum going with the release of “The Black Bar Mitzvah.” In case you were curious, Ross has no Jewish ancestors but has a love for the people and culture, so he named his mixtape accordingly. The mixtape is available for free download from Datpiff and features all remixes of current trap records.

G.O.O.D. Music brings an end to the season ‘Cruel Summer’
On Oct. 19, 2011, Kanye West tweeted the following: “GOODMUSIC. THE ALBUM. SPRING2012.” From that point on, expectations have been through the roof for what West and his signees were up to. The hype truly began to build this past April when West released “Cold,” featuring DJ Khaled and “Mercy,” which features Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz. Both songs instantly became hits, with Mercy rising to No. 1 on the Billboard charts earlier this summer. Five months later, the G.O.O.D. Music team released its first compilation album, “Cruel Summer,” just three days before the last official day of the season.

2 Chainz debut disappoints despite strong singles
Rapper 2 Chainz exploded onto the scene when he released his first solo project, “T.R.U. REALigon” last November. The rapper formerly named Tity Boi underwent a name change in 2011 to make himself more radio and family friendly. The change has resurrected the career of the man who represented half of Playaz Circle, famous for their single “Duffle Bag Boy,” which featured Lil Wayne. Since the image makeover, he has signed a solo deal with Def Jam Recordings and has been featured on Nicki Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap” and Kanye West’s “Mercy.” On Aug. 14, 2 Chainz released his debut album as a solo artist, “Based on a T.R.U. Story.”

Philly’s hip-hop summer lineup looks promising
As summer rapidly approaches, it’s time to block off some dates on the calendar for an amazing group of concerts coming through Philadelphia over the next few months. It’s only right that we start with this week’s huge announcement from Jay-Z and Mayor Michael Nutter, in which they unveiled the Budweiser Made in America festival, which Jay-Z will headline with support from 28 other artists to be named May 21. The festival will take place Sept. 1 and 2 across three stages on the Ben Franklin Parkway, with tickets going on sale May 23 through Live Nation. This marks the first major festival the City of Philadelphia has ever had, and it will bring 50,000 people to the steps of the Art Museum this Labor Day weekend.
