Can olives and IKEA determine true love?

What is your major? What is your sign? These are just two of the many questions people ask potential Valentines to test compatibility. But beyond astrology and academics, there are plenty of creative ways to determine if someone is a perfect match.

1.) The Olive Theory—

One popular example is the “Olive Theory,” made famous by the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.” The idea is simple — if one person in a couple loves olives and the other does not, they are meant to be. The logic? The olive lover gets all the olives then the olive hater never has to deal with them; it is a perfectly balanced system.

Olives may be a divisive ingredient, but they often appear in fancy cocktails, appetizers and family recipes. So when one person willingly hands over their unwanted olives to their partner, it is seen as a small yet meaningful act of love. Romantic, right?

2.) The IKEA Test

Think you and your special someone have a strong relationship? A Valentine’s date to IKEA might be the ultimate test. If you can make it through the experience unscathed, consider yourself lucky.

A trip to IKEA is known to challenge relationships, as the store is a maze filled with endless furniture options, ranging in both style and price. For new couples, picking out furniture together is a test of compatibility, especially if both have bold and differing tastes. It all comes down to compromise. But selecting the furniture is only the beginning — the real challenge comes when you get home and have to assemble it together.

3.) Musical Compatibility

And last, but certainly not least, Spotify has its own take on a compatibility test. The music platform recognizes just how important music is to some people. After all, how can road trips, concert outings, or cooking dates ever go smoothly if your music taste clashes with your special someone’s?

In 2022, Spotify introduced a Valentine’s Day feature that allows couples to see the percentage of music they have in common. For some, it was a fun way to bond over shared favorite artists. For others, it was a wake-up call that their partner’s playlist was filled with unexpected surprises. Whether you and your Valentine are musical soulmates or complete opposites, one thing is certain — nothing reveals true compatibility like arguing over the aux cord.

While all these tests and theories are fun, there is no compatibility test like that of the feeling of comfort, butterflies and easy communication. A perfect match is not determined by shared playlists, furniture preferences, or a mutual understanding of olive distribution. It is found in the memorable moments that feel effortless, where you can truly embrace who both of you are. Spend February 14th with your Valentine doing something you both love!
