“Captain America: Brave New World,” the fourth installment in the Captain America film series, hit theatres on Valentine’s Day with an $88.5 million opening weekend. The movie follows the journey of Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, as he navigates carrying the title of Captain America following the departure of Steve Rogers.
Along with Anthony Mackie, the movie stars Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, Rosa Salazar and Giancarlo Esposito.
With the movie’s large opening weekend also came a mixture of reviews for the film. Some viewers have expressed distaste for the pacing of the film, stating that it felt rushed, while others have praised it as a new take for Marvel movies.
However, one criticism of the film that some people have expressed is with the main character himself. Some believe that Captain America should not be played by a black man, stating that they do not feel that the character fits the presence of Captain America.
Prior to the release of the movie, people online had stated that they felt that the transition of the title was unnecessary and that the character Sam Wilson was not deserving of the title. They have stated that they do not believe the character of Sam Wilson has had enough of an arc to justify being the new Captain America. People have also expressed that they do not believe that the actor, Anthony Mackie, has the ability to lead a movie.
While there have been some negative views for the film in regards to Sam Wilson playing Captain America, there have also been people expressing their satisfaction with the progression of the character. People have voiced that having a character who represents America played by a black man highlights the work done by black people within America that often goes unrecognized. People have called Sam Wilson and the movie revolutionary when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film sets a new precedent for upcoming movies in the franchise, with more representation and variety of characters.
