‘This Old Dog’ marks change of pace for indie icon Mac DeMarco
I can’t quite put my finger on how Mac DeMarco became such a beloved staple of indie rock. He never quite grabbed me with his music (not yet, at least), but I can’t deny he’s got a certain charm. He’s probably the only artist who I’ve watched more interviews of than actual videos of his performances. He’s likely the goofiest dude in the whole world.

Julien Baker sets the Fillmore aflame with Funeral Pyre
I recently learned that The Decemberists have a pretty huge following here in Philly. When the Fillmore announced their April 14 concert with Julien Baker, I did not expect it to sell out so quickly.

Palehound, Big Thief captivate at Johnny Brenda’s show
Johnny Brenda’s remains one of my favorite venues in the city of Philadelphia, and when I get the chance to see a band I love there, it’s always a special experience. When Brooklyn’s Big Thief announced the tour following their truly great album “Masterpiece” and I saw that they were coming to Johnny Brenda’s on March 26, I knew I had to be in attendance.

King Gizzard experiments with exotic music techniques
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard released a new album. This hardly seems like news when the seven-piece psychedelic rock band from Down Under puts out music more often than almost any other band in the scene. They’ve released nine studio albums within the past five years. They also have said that they plan on releasing a total of five studio albums in 2017 alone, those crazy rock ’n’ rollers!

‘Whatever and Ever Amen’ celebrates 20th anniversary
I remember the day when “Whatever and Ever Amen” was released, 20 years ago this week, back in 1997. I was four months old, kicking and screaming for my mom to run out and buy me the new Ben Folds Five CD.

‘Goon Squad’ rolls through EF: Indie funk group Ripe opens for G. Love
Quality indie funk bands are not so easy to find. Many funk bands out there take the “retro” label literally, often recreating the style of classic funk bands in a purist way. It’s hard to be original when branding oneself with such a specific flavor, but I believe it is possible.

Radio 104.5, Philly’s alternative music station, held its seventh annual Winter Jam festival Jan. 15. Radio 104.5 is known for its free outdoor “block party” concerts, held once a month each summer, but every winter the station hosts one additional show.

The cast of “Mamma Mia!” dazzled the audience Dec. 27 at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia. The show is currently on its farewell North American tour, having stopped in Philly for a short time frame during the holiday season — Dec. 27 through Dec. 31.
