College of Business to add Master’s leadership degree

Oct. 7, 2011

Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business announced in a press release Sept. 28 that it will be launching a Master of Science program in leadership in January 2012.

According to the press release, this part-time program will give Drexel students the tools to develop analytical and leadership skills in business, with the ultimate goal of creating successful leaders in the workforce. The main focus of this program is to bring the business world and society closer together.

The M.S. in leadership program is for students who are “in a position to acquire knowledge and become effective leaders and managers,” Ronald Nordone, assistant dean of Graduate Programs at the LeBow College of Business, said.

Courses will be offered at the LeBow College of Business campus in Malvern, Pa.

“This is our way of reaching out to people who can’t make it to main campus,” Nordone said.

This leadership program will give students “a set of tools and techniques that business managers can utilize to make decisions,” George P. Tsetsekos, dean of LeBow College, said. “[The M.S. in leadership program] is a very unique program because it reflects the needs of the business community.”

The program is seeking to reach out to an array of students. While the program does require that applicants have a bachelor’s degree, students do not necessarily have to have a bachelor’s degree in business. The target audience of the leadership program is ideally students who have four to five years of experience with business classes, but it is not a necessity.

The leadership program is geared toward students who did not major in business as undergraduates but who wish to develop general business knowledge, strong leadership skills and ethical decision-making skills.

The M.S. in leadership program is not meant to replace the MBA, but it is an alternative to students.

The program will last less than two years and will require 45 credits. Topics for courses include business ethics, economics of social justice, leading effective organizations, social forces and a capstone course in sustainability.

In addition to core business classes, the M.S. in leadership program offers “Lifelong Advantage,” which is a co-curricular program that allows more hands-on activities beyond the classroom. This program invites students to participate in workshops and hear business speakers, giving students a taste of the real workforce.

Applications are now open to students who wish to join the program for the upcoming winter term. Applicants are asked to include all transcripts from past schooling and an essay. Applicants are not required to take the GMAT or GRE. Applications can be submitted online, and paper applications are also available.
