Drexel Field Hockey clinched a spot in the CAA postseason for the third year in a row. The team secured the spot after defeating Hofstra 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 11. Hofstra attempted one shot in the third quarter, but was overwhelmed with the whooping 19 shots sent towards their net by Drexel.
Valentine Van Hellemont sent a goal into the net in the 66th minute of the match. Hellmont, followed by starter Anna Castaldo, led the team, attempting five shots throughout the match.
Following the Dragon’s win over Hofstra, the Field Hockey team secured another win just two days later against La Salle 3-1. The first quarter was a scoreless battle, however shortly into the second, Castaldo knocked in a goal from a rebound, scoring her sixth goal of the season.
Five minutes later, Paige Hoyer assisted Hellmont’s second goal for Drexel, establishing Hoyer’s first assist of the season and Hellmont’s sixth goal of the season. In the third quarter, Pien Elsen assisted Tina Rawa’s goal to the back of the net, making it Rawa’s first score of the season.
La Salle scored their first goal in the fourth quarter of the match, but was unable to catch up to Drexel. The Dragon’s earned their eighth straight victory, making their record 10-3.
For the week of Oct. 7-13, Alana Poole was named Drexel Dragon of the Week.
“Poole, member of the field hockey team, pitched a shutout against Hofstra on Friday night and held La Salle to one goal on Sunday in Drexel’s two wins this weekend. Poole has a had phenomenal season as she is 7-0 since starting in goal as well as ranking first in the national in goalie win-loss percentage and fourth in goals against average,” Drexel Athletics wrote in an article.
The Dragon’s will host Lafayette and attempt a ninth straight victory at Buckley Field on Oct.18 at 6 p.m.
