Fall sports midseason report

While the academic season for Drexel’s term has just started, the fall sports season has already reached its halfway point. The sports included this season include soccer and field hockey. Here is a recap of the first half of these sport’s seasons and a glimpse of the games to come. 

Men’s Soccer

The beginning of the first full season for head coach David Castellanos has yielded mixed results. While the team is 5-4 overall, they are currently in eighth place in the CAA conference. 

Overall midseason record: 5-4, 1-2 in CAA conference

Next game: Oct. 5th at 1 pm vs. Hofstra

Player Spotlight: For the first weeks of the season, the following men’s soccer players were named Drexel Dragon of the Week: Dominick Bachstein, Raphael Bartell, and Ethan Schaefer. Additionally Bachstein was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six’s Offensive Player of the Week and Bartell was recognized by the CAA as the conference’s defensive player of the week.

Women’s Field Hockey

As of the time of publication, Women’s field hockey was ranked number 20 in the NCAA rankings, in part due to their four-game winning streak. Currently, they are tied for first place with Delaware in the CAA conference. 

Overall midseason record: 6-3, 2-0 in CAA conference

Next game: Oct. 4th at 3 pm vs. Towson  

Player Spotlight: For the first half of their season, women’s field hockey Anna Castaldo and Kenzie Lever were named Drexel Dragons of the Week. Players Castalado and Valentine Van Hellemont earned CAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Pien Elsen earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week twice. Furthermore, player Alana Poole CAA Co-Rookie of the week. 

Women’s Soccer

While the women’s soccer team has won games against rivals UPenn and CAA opponent Towson, they have struggled on the road, posting a 0-5-1 record in away games. In the CAA conference, Drexel is currently in eighth place. 

Overall midseason record: 3-5-2, 1-1-1 in CAA conference

Next game: Oct. 6th at 1 pm vs. Elon

Player Spotlight: Casey Touey and Elise Duffy were the Drexel Dragons of the Week for the first half of the women’s soccer season. Additionally, Joella Chase was announced as CAA Defensive Player of the Week, the second of her career.
