After a red-hot start to the season, the Drexel University men’s wrestling team continued their quest for dominance with their participation in the Shorty Hitchcock Classic at Millersville University Jan. 17, and two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association matches, facing the United States Military Academy and Columbia University Jan. 20. The Drexel University men’s wrestling team has had a great 2018 start, with an excellent finish at the Southern Scuffle. More wrestlers than ever placed at the competition, showing that they can compete against the best wrestlers in the nation. This trend continued when they played at the Daskalakis Athletic Center against Franklin & Marshall College and Keystone College Jan. 11. As the Drexel University men’s wrestling team returned from a small break from competition, they got ready for the Southern Scuffle Jan. 1. It was held at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This year’s competition was momentous, as Drexel had never placed more than two people in the Southern Scuffle. This time around, seven Drexel wrestlers placed in the competition, with the team overall placing sixth. Junior Stephen Loiseau, who competed in the 197-pound weight class, was the highlight of the group with a fourth place finish in the competition. In the last week of classes here at Drexel University, students are busy preparing for finals in the week ahead. The men’s wrestling team, however, looked to its next tournament, the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada Dec. 1-2. As the first quarter at Drexel University comes to a close, students are focused on acing their finals. But, to some student athletes, it is a start to a new sports season, especially for the wrestling team. With their star rookie from Reading, Pennsylvania, freshman Austin DeSanto, Drexel competed in the Keystone Classic Nov. 19. The Drexel University wrestling team took to the mats this past weekend in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships. The championships were held in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. It was a good showing for Drexel as six wrestlers were honored at the podium with a seventh place award or better. The mat men had not wrestled since their weekend against the University of Pennsylvania almost three weeks before. The Drexel University wrestling team spent Feb. 4 in a double header against Franklin and Marshall College and Hofstra University.   The day began in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with the Dragons matched up against Franklin and Marshall, and it ended at the Daskalakis Athletic Center with Drexel facing Hofstra. The Dragons have been handling their business lately, but the Saturday back-to-back was going to be tough. The Drexel University wrestling team took on American University Jan. 29. It was a competitive match, one the Dragons fought hard to win. This was the first weekend in two weeks during which Drexel had only one match to focus on. The team was well-rested and took advantage of the extra recovery time. The match against Oregon State was filled with emotion and excitement as Drexel hosted a spirit night event. However, before battling in front of a raucous home crowd, Drexel went on the road to take on Binghamton. The Drexel University wrestling team took to the mat in Philadelphia Nov. 20 for the Keystone Classic. It’s always a fun event where the Dragons can compete against formidable opponents from different schools. The Dragons had a great showing in the competition as five wrestlers placed in the top five of their respective weight classes. The Drexel University wrestling team has started their season hot, winning their first four matches. The Dragons’ squad of mat men took their talents to West Point, New York to face off against the United States Military Academy on Nov. 13. The team was coming off of a strong 36-9 win in their previous matchup and looked to continue their dominance this season. In the 125, junior Tanner Shoap looked to get the team rolling early. The Drexel University wrestling team started the season with victories against Shippensburg University and Garner-Webb University at North Penn High School Nov. 5. The Dragons got things started with a dominant 50-0 clean sweep of the Shippensburg Raiders. Junior Tanner Shoap set the pace for Drexel forcing a technical fall against his Shippensburg opponent, David Reagan, in the 125-pound fight. The Drexel University wrestling team’s junior Matthew Cimato won the 149-pound championship at the 2016 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association tournament in Princeton, New Jersey March 6. With his victory on Sunday, Cimato became only the second wrestler in Drexel history to finish in first place in the 149-pound division at the EIWA tournament. Cimato, who was the two-seed in the 149-pound tournaments, defeated Cornell University’s Joe Galasso 5-4 after he scored with an escape as time expired.
