Squash ends season in Individual Championships

The Drexel University men’s and women’s squash teams finished out their 2014-15 season Feb. 28 through March 1 at the Individual Championships in Princeton, New Jersey.

Drexel finished 7-12 overall at the competition. Ibrahim Bakir contributed four wins while Michael Thompson, Atticus Kelly and Ryan Morgan contributed one win each for the Dragons.

Bakir put up the best performance for the Dragons at the championships. He rallied all the way to reach the Molloy Division semifinals. Bakir swept his first opponent, Vincent Mencotti, in the round of 64. He also defeated Andres de Frutos 3-0 in the round of 32, James Kacergis 3-1 in the round of 16 and Kevin Chen 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Bakir dropped his match in the semifinals to Andrew McGuiness in four games.

Thompson won his match in the Molloy Division, the round of 64. He defeated William MacFarlane in a three game sweep. Thompson then went on to the round of 32 when he was defeated by Dylan Cunningham in five games.

Luke Willemse and Kelly both suffered losses in the first round of the Pool Division Main Draw. Willemse was swept in the first round of the Pool Division Consolation.

Kelly secured a victory for Drexel in the first round of the Pool Division Consolation. He picked up the win by default. Kelly then lost in three in the second round to Rishi Tandon.

On the women’s side, Hayley Hughes fell in the round of 64 in the Ramsay Division Main Draw in three games to Elena Maria Ubina. Hughes also dropped her match in the first round of the Ramsay Division Consolation to Rachel Leizman in four games.

Mary Fung-A-Fat dropped her round of 64 match in the Holleran Division Main Draw to Hannah Hay-Smith in four games. She also fell to Mina Shakarshy in the first round of the Holleran Division Consolation in a strong five game effort.

Morgan had a bye in the round of 64 in Holleran Division Main Draw and then was defeated by Alex Toth in four games in the round of 32. In the Holleran Division Second Round Consolation, Morgan got a win for the Dragons in the first round, defeating Selena Maity in a five game battle. Morgan then fell in the quarterfinals to Jocelyn Lehman in five games.
