The Drexel University men’s swimming team took to the water Feb. 5 and 6 in the New York University Invitational. The men’s team had been swimming extremely well, coming into this invitational having won their past five meets. However, this meet did not keep team scores. On Friday, Greg Buckley, Cameron Hoyer and Ted Dickerson swam in three races. Buckley took sixth place in the 200 back, touching the wall at 1:58.89. Drexel University’s swim team hit the water this weekend on senior day, a very emotional occasion for both teams. The men’s and women’s teams honored their seniors and went to work in the pool. It was tough battling the emotions of senior day, but both teams performed well. The match was against Lehigh University. The women’s team showed notable performances across the board. The Drexel University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took to the water against Georgetown University Jan. 21. There were notable performance from both teams, but only the men’s team was able to come away with a victory. Even with the loss, the women’s team had multiple top finishes. In the 200-meter back Gillian Gress notched an impressive timing of 2:07.53, earning herself a first place finish. In the 100 breast, Rachel Bernhardt earned first place with a time of 1:05.05. The Drexel University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took to the water this weekend against Howard University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Both teams competed against Howard University, but only the Men’s team competed against NJIT. The women’s team came off of a disappointing match last weekend versus the University of Delaware and Northeastern University, as they lost both of the contests. Both the men’s and women’s teams swam against the University of Delaware, and the women’s team also swam against Northeastern University. Each of the assembled teams was anxious for a good start to the year as an early win could shift positive momentum in the direction of both teams. The Drexel University men’s and women’s swim teams competed at the AT&T Winter National Championships from Dec. 3 to Dec. 5. This was their final match until returning to water on Jan. 3 and 4 for the Georgia Diving Invitational. The AT&T Winter National Championship was held in Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington. On Dec. 3, day one, Joel Berryman was the lone Dragon to swim. This week, both the men’s and women’s swimming/diving teams at Drexel University were winners, as they beat their respective opponents from Binghamton University at their meet on Nov. 7. On the men’s side, the Dragons roasted the Bearcats, finishing with a final team score of 145-98. They were successful from the bottom up, with great success from competitors in every single grade. The Drexel swimming and diving teams are off to a fine start this season as both the men’s and women’s teams head into the Pittsburgh Invitational this weekend, Nov. 22-23. The men’s team is 5-1 and currently on a torrid five-game winning streak. Things started off on the wrong foot in the beginning of the season with a loss to La Salle University 184-116. Thirteen is widely recognized as an unlucky number. But that wasn’t the case in the men’s Colonial Athletic Association swimming championship, as the University of North Carolina Wilmington claimed its 13th straight title March 1. Meanwhile, the Drexel men’s swimming team finished fifth out of six in the tournament, with 422 points. After the first day of the championships, the Dragons sat in third place, claiming silver and bronze medals while breaking a few school records in the process. There was some excitement to be found from the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams following their performance Nov. 22-24 in the Frank Elm Invitational at the Rutgers University Aquatic Center. The Dragons didn’t come home with a first-place finish, but they have proven themselves valid competitors in the Colonial Athletic Association. This year’s Frank Elm Invitational showcased a number of top teams throughout the nation. The Drexel swimming and diving teams will head to Piscataway, N.J., for the Frank Elm Invitational hosted Nov. 22 by Rutgers University. The men’s team has yet to be defeated through six meets, and the women’s team is coming off a disheartening loss to the Bearcats of Binghamton University, a close 159-141 contest. There were a few bright spots during the Binghamton meet, but none was brighter than sophomore standout Madison Kramer. The Drexel swimming and diving teams continued their dominance in the water Nov. 2 as they defeated George Washington University. The Dragons performed very well in their first home meet of the season. The women’s team overwhelmed the Colonials in a 160-131 victory while the men remained undefeated for the season with yet another lopsided finish, as they took it to the Colonials 183-108. The Drexel swimming and diving teams traveled to Baltimore to take on Loyola University Maryland, Lafayette College and Seton Hall University Oct. 26. The men’s team conquered the meet with wins against all three opponents to remain undefeated for the season; they beat Loyola 196-103, Lafayette 208-90 and Seton Hall 207-89. The women also brought their best to Baltimore, capturing two wins against Lafayette (212-88) and Seton Hall (163-136) and just falling short to Loyola (137-163) in a highly competitive contest. The 2012-13 season for Drexel’s swimming and diving teams had its ups and downs, to say the least. As the Dragons turn the page for next season, they will aim for more consistency throughout the program. The women finished with a disappointing record of 2-8. Their season ended with a seventh-place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, hosted by George Mason University. The men’s team tipped the overall scale to a more balanced position for the program last season. They finished the season with a 6-2 record.
